A SHELTER
AND REFUGE

Safe Environment and Immediate Relief

The shelter provides immediate protection and a stable living environment for women and children who have been affected by domestic violence. In addition to physical safety, the refuge offers essential services like food, clothing, and medical care.

Vocational Training and Skill Development

Beyond emergency relief, the shelter focuses heavily on vocational training and skill development. The women are taught new skills that can be translated into sustainable income opportunities, such as crafting, sewing, and other small-scale production activities.

Job Opportunities and Social Enterprise

To create a direct link between training and income, the foundation integrates employment opportunities into the shelter program — including the seasonal Christmas toy factory, where women earn income producing toys distributed across Latin America.

Counseling and Psychological Support

The shelter offers mental health and counseling services to help women and children recover from trauma. These services are designed to build confidence, improve emotional well-being, and provide strategies for transitioning into a life free from abuse.

Pathway to Self-Sufficiency

The ultimate goal is to help women transition from reliance on the shelter to full self-sufficiency. By providing skill-building, employment opportunities, and personal support, MurphsLife helps these women build a stable, independent future.

During the holiday season, the increased demand for toys creates additional job opportunities for the women in the shelter. This not only boosts their income but also extends the shelter's capacity to assist more women by funneling the proceeds back into the program.

The women's involvement in toy production not only provides financial benefits but also fosters a sense of accomplishment and purpose as they contribute directly to a larger humanitarian effort.

Through this holistic approach, MurphsLife's Women's Shelter and Refuge program in Ecuador serves as a model for combining immediate relief with long-term empowerment — equipping women with the tools, training, and confidence needed to create a stable, independent future.

Why it works

Four ways the factory multiplies impact.

  • Seasonal demand creates paid work opportunities.

  • Income supports women and strengthens the program.

  • Proceeds help scale capacity year-round.

  • Purpose and community support emotional recovery.
